“Settle” is one of the few songs on the record that seems to not have much of a shape musically it feels distant and hard to get into. Trimble’s vocal coupled with guest vocalist Valentina creates a vibrant and bright harmony, perfectly placed within the music for a compelling track. At this point the record starts to settle down with more melancholy songs (“Someday,” “Sleep Alone”), but it’s the “The World Is Watching” that truly captures a unique feel dynamically due to it being a duet. It transitions into a beautiful love song that becomes even more romanticized when a horn section comes in toward the end for an aurally pleasing piece. Things slow down with “Sun” and when the chord-driven piano chimes in along with Trimble’s fragile voice, it feels somber until the rest of the band comes in. “Wake Up” comes back to the post-rock flair mentioned earlier, utilizing a buzzy guitar lead and siren-sounding synth to back the discontent but driven feel.
“Handshake” is a predominately electronic track that fizzles and pops across the board, but it’s the pounding bass line that gives the song its addicting groove. Sam Halliday and Kevin Baird both drive the music, perfectly complementing each transition with their instrumentation, especially in the big band/swing era-influenced bridge that comes out of nowhere and works wonders. Alex Trimble’s stellar vocal work resonates with the perfect amount of boyish charm, shake, and vibrato.

Leading off with “Next Year,” traditional TDCC blitzes and blossoms with an arpeggiated synth lead before heading off into a carefree verse full of uplifting melody. Beacon is a shining example of how simplicity and technicality can mix together confidently, working for each other rather than just trying to outshine each other.īeacon continues where Tourist History basically left off, expanding on the indie electro-pop grandeur but with some songs taking on more of a post-rock vibe rather than the tendency for syrupy sweetness. Two Door Cinema Club prove that even being a 3-piece band, such matters have no real definition when it comes to their music.
Album DescriptionI love it when such a simple band can bring several layers of complexity to their music, when traditionally simple styles can be wrapped up in lush textures to bring the music to satisfying resolutions at each coda. See More Your browser does not support the audio element. It just doesn't have the spark that Tourist History had, even if it's a more accomplished album overall. There's nothing overtly bad about Beacon it shows that Two Door Cinema Club still have a remarkable knack for winsome melodies and harmonies set to kinetic beats. Two Door Cinema Club fare better when they stick closer to their wheelhouse of charming electro-guitar pop, which they do on the bittersweet "Sleep Alone" and the pretty title track. Songs such as "Handshake" are never less than pleasant examples of the band's bright, bouncy dance-rock, but they're not particularly distinctive on the other hand, attempts to rock harder like "Someday" aren't entirely successful either - the guitars don't just sound heavy, they sound weighed down, and the gulf between them and Alex Trimble's soothing vocals is nearly as big as the disconnect between the music and Beacon's borderline-saucy album cover. However, this polish comes at a price, and much of the nervy, scrappy energy that made Tourist History so appealing is missing from Beacon. With Lee's assistance, the band made Beacon a more sophisticated-sounding set of songs: witness the clever chord changes and harmonies on "Next Year," the more prominent electronics on "Wake Up," the intriguing percussion on "Pyramid," and the big brass swells on "Sun," which make the song a knowing nod to the band's '80s influences. While that set of songs was already pretty sleek thanks to the production skills of Eliot James, the band opted to polish things further with the help of Jacknife Lee, who has worked with R.E.M., U2, Snow Patrol, and plenty of other epic-sounding artists. Two Door Cinema Club returned with Beacon after a couple of years touring in support of their debut album, Tourist History.
